September 21, 2009 -- Dr. Christine B. Whelan, Phd., journalist and professor recommends "Single", the new documentary film to academics to use in Family/Sociology class on her website SWAN(R)SONG (www.christinewhelan.wordpress.com).
Whelan should know. An accomplished author, "Marry Smart: The Intelligent Woman's Guide to True Love (Simon and Schuster 2009) and "Why Smart Men Marry Smart Women (Simon and Schuster 2006) , is currently Visiting Assistant Professor in the Sociology Department at the University of Iowa. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Princeton University and earned her doctorate from the University of Oxford.
Whelan has held teaching positions at Princeton University in the Sociology and Politics Department and has been published in The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and The New York Post and writes a bi-weekly relationship advice column for Busted Halo, a young adult website.
"SINGLE" (www.singlefilm.com), produced and directed by Richard Atkinson and Jane Scandurra, includes a cast of thought-provoking and often humorous social experts (Whelan included), singer/songwriters, comedians , and "real" people describing how today's life has become more complex, intense, and demanding and that finding and maintaining a lasting relationship has never been more challenging.
- The accelerated evolution of women in recent years has resulted in more lifestyle choices for both men and women.
- We live in a youth-obsessed, instant gratification, attention-deficit world.
- Media and technology have heightened our expectations of finding the "perfect" partner and maintaining the "perfect" relationship.
Juliet Huddy, a nationally-syndicated talk show host on Fox TV described "Single" as a really cool, cool documentary" during an interview with co-producer, Jane Scandurra. Tiffanie Green, influential film critic writing for online film review, Tinape.com, described "Single" as brilliantly done.
Public audiences have been equally quick to respond enthusiastically. "Whether you are single, married, widowed or divorced you will see yourself in this documentary" said Vickie B., a single 30-something from NY, who attended a screening. "The game has certainly changed and it's reassuring to know many of us are experiencing the same thrills of victory and the agonies of defeat".
Philip J., a single man in his thirties from Connecticut, made his parents watch the film. "Now they've stopped asking me why I'm not married".
Officially selected at the 2008 New York New Filmmakers Festival and included in the Berkshire International Festival Sunday Series, the film was picked up by Osiris Entertainment of Chatsworth, California for US and international distribution and is now available at Netflix.com, barnesandnoble.com, amazon.com, and major retail outlets nationally.
