September 22, 2009 -- “Bound for Glory: A Woody Guthrie Celebration” continues through September 30th at Casa Sandoval, a senior living community in Hayward, California. This is the inaugural West Coast showing of this exhibit by the Woody Guthrie Foundation.
“We’re so happy to be bringing Woody’s story and legacy back to the West Coast,” said Nora Guthrie, daughter of the legendary songwriter. “We’re so happy to be bringing him home after all these years.”
Many of Woody’s folksy tunes were written during the Depression era of the 1930s. Songs like “This Land is Your Land” and “Dust Bowl Refugee” told the story of America’s struggle with an economy in ruins. Unknown to many, though, is the fact that Woody Guthrie was also an artist.
Nora Guthrie has curated “Strokes of Electricity”, a vast collection of Woody’s artwork. Ms. Guthrie will conduct an in-depth series of discussions showcasing her father’s artwork, his creative relationship with his Jewish mother-in-law, Aliza Greenblatt, and a biographical multimedia presentation. The highlight of the discussion series, “Strokes of Electricity”, is a living chronicle of Woody’s skills as a portrait artist and illustrator.
The September 26th event is open to the public and also features Casa Sandoval’s own band, “Mr. C and the ET”, singing a medley of Woody’s songs, including “This Land is Your Land”, “The Sinking of the Reuben James”, “Grand Coulee Dam”, “Deportee” and “Lonesome Valley”.
Nora Guthrie will formally introduce “Man in the Sand”, the last of five films highlighting Woody’s life, on September 27th.
The public is invited to attend the daily art exhibit and the movie screening, free of charge. Donations will be accepted on behalf of the Woody Guthrie Foundation. The full schedule of exhibits, film screenings and discussions is available at www.casasandoval.com/events/special.asp.
